Ingredients
Meat base
1 kg minced beef or lamb
1 large onion, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 tbsp vegetable oil
2 tbsp mild curry powder
½ tsp ground turmeric
1 tsp ground cumin
Salt and black pepper, to taste
2 slices white bread
120 ml milk
50 g raisins or sultanas
2 tbsp chutney
1 tbsp lemon juice
Custard topping
2 eggs
250 ml milk
Pinch of salt
To finish
Bay leaves (optional)
Steps
Soak the bread in the milk, then squeeze lightly and set aside.
Heat the oil in a pan and cook the onion until soft.
Add the garlic and spices and cook briefly until fragrant.
Add the minced meat and cook until browned.
Stir in the soaked bread, dried fruit, chutney, lemon juice, and seasoning.
Transfer the mixture to a baking dish and smooth the surface.
Whisk together the eggs, milk, and salt, then pour evenly over the meat.
Add bay leaves on top if using.
Bake at 180°C for 30–35 minutes until the topping is just set and lightly golden.
Rest briefly before serving.
Serve hot with yellow rice, vegetables, or a simple salad. Often accompanied by chutney or pickled vegetables.
