Hello, and welcome to Salt Roads an interactive food, ingredient and culture globe, and a project I would love you to be a part of.
My name is Hayley, and for the past 15 years I have worked as a private chef, cooking for and serving some of the most notable families in the world.
As a private chef you live inside other people’s lives. You travel with them, stock their fridges, learn their daily rhythms, preferences and priorities. You have to be present enough to anticipate everything, and invisible enough to protect their privacy.
Some of these families could eat in three-Michelin-starred restaurants every night if they wanted to but what they return to, again and again, is a home-cooked meal. Something made with attention and care, and an understanding
of who they are.
This kind of insight into family life has changed how I see food.
It's changed how I see wealth, nobility, fame and occupation.
Over the years, I have also seen how globalisation, convenience culture, and large corporations are changing the way we eat. Real home cooking that is passed down through generations is becoming easier to lose.
At its deepest level, cooking preserves independence, memory, care, culture, confidence, and wellbeing. I believe that matters.
Salt Roads is my homage to home cooking, cooks, and chefs all over the world.
